Dear JoePa for POTUS,
Thank you for contacting me about the Federal budget. I appreciate hearing from you on this important matter.
I share the concerns that many Virginians have about government spending. I also recognize that our nation faces real challenges in balancing the federal deficit with the need to stabilize our economy. Our government has spent a great deal of taxpayers' money in order to improve our short-term economic situation. In order to begin to reverse this precipitous decline, I believe that all options for reducing our deficit need to be on the table to provide future generations the same opportunities we have had. Our current tax code needs a comprehensive review. It is too complex and has contradictory goals. Some experts estimate that the federal government loses almost $300 billion dollars a year through inefficient collection, offshore tax havens, and other loopholes. At a time of rising federal deficits these items should be examined; I am working with my colleagues in the Senate to ensure that we lay the groundwork to accomplish this goal. We ought to similarly begin to review how we are going to conduct meaningful reform of our entitlement system.
The President released his fiscal year 2010 budget blueprint on February 26, 2009, which can be found at http://www.whitehouse.gov/
Again, thank you for contacting me. Please continue to contact me with your opinions and concerns.
Sincerely,
MARK R. WARNER
United States Senator
